Math Keeps Changing;
Can't Keep Up?

Greater clarity when it comes to volatile math.

Just as many languages have gone through changes in history, some for the better and others to our detriment, the lovely language of mathematics is no exception.

I have been working in many homes as a tutor and find one of the greatest complaints to be the various methods of deciphering children's homework, particularly math. New concepts and strategies introduced to kids can appear as a widening gap to parents' tried and true methods. As frustrating as it can be, there are free resources I have found to help in familiarizing and understanding these new approaches.

1. Khan Academy: This is one of my favorite resources; a non-profit, 100% free website with videos and content to help from 2nd grade through high school and even differential equations. Help with science, computing, humanities, history, and more are also found on their page.

2. Desmos: At first I thought of Desmos as various online calculators, but there are also free activities that are engaging for students to learn. I recommend this to those in middle school especially.

3. NCTM Illuminations: This is a newer website I came across as I looked for practice problems. With lessons, interactive games, and brain teasers, there are opportunities to practice and apply what is learned to homework. Recommended for PreK and up.

4. K 5 Learning; Although there are free printable math worksheets, this website also grants access to reading comprehensive work, writing, and free ebooks. This is specifically for K through 5th grade.

5. I am here to help too! Although online resources are very helpful and extensive, there is nothing like having one-on-one personal help to help clarify the tough concepts. Tutoring can have a great affect not only on the grades and understanding of students, but also on life skills such as confidence, organization, and self-discipline. Let me know how I might be able to help you.
